Welcome to the National Trail

Australia’s premier long distance trekking route for the self reliant trekker stretches an incredible 5330 kilometres from Cooktown to Healesville. The Trail links stock routes, bush tracks, fire trails and surveyed roads along the Great Dividing Range.

Since 1989 the name of legendary Australian bushman R.M. Williams has been synonymous with the National Trail, who, alongside the Australian Trail Horse Riders Association created a Trail where walkers, horse riders, cyclists and animal packers could experience the lifestyle of drovers who once frequented Australia’s stock routes.

The National Trail Maps are Now Available

We have now commenced release of our National Trail maps to complement our guidebooks. The maps are each in a zip file containing a range of viewing options. The zip file contains both an A3-sized printable PDF map and a larger-scale A3-sized PDF chart, which places the map in context. The other four files allow the Trail’s trackline to be uploaded to the Avenza app or specific brands of GPS devices. Refer to your brand of GPS as to which file is appropriate to upload. Whatever you choose, you can always print the PDF map and chart (both designed to be printed at A3 size).

Covid – 19 Virus and the Trail

It is now recommended that trekkers follow their own State’s recommendations for regional and interstate travel and whether camping is allowed. It is best of course to contact the section coordinator of the area of trail you wish to travel to check out the condition of trail especially that affected by the bush fires.
